Ancillary DIGIPACK

Our digipack will be printed on think card because it's more environmentally friendly and much cheaper. The cd case itself will feature 3 different panels. The front cover being panel 1, back cover being panel 2, and the inside is a panorama shot of the band, being panel 3. There will be 2 slots inside the cd cover which will be for the CD (slot right) and the pullout (slot left). As there is no snap case for the cd, the panorama shot will be completely visible and none of it will be covered by the cd or the cd slot.
The booklet will be a 3 panel booklet, the front band picture being panel 1, the back logo being panel 2, and the inside lyrics being panel 3. We decided to keep the font style the same for the whole album as the hardcore and metal genre have quite complicated writing with flicks and decorations (serif).
The text on the front cover reads the album name (top right) and the bands name (bottom middle) so that people can easily see it on the shelf of a store.
The back cover has the tracks on the album and reviews, in a non complicated serif font, so customers with reading difficulties can easily see the writing (sans serif text).
The inside booklet has thanks from the band to sponsors and treehouse studios.
Front cover top right
Back Cover top left

Theoretical approaches to a music promo

Andrew Goodwin’s outlook on Theoretical approaches within a music promo.

·         Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics in their videos

o   For example metal contains a dark setting and lots of performance.

·         Record labels demand close ups to show off a bands look or style.

·         A perspective of the people in the videos is frequently used.

o   For example looking at screens or looking through telescopes, commonly used in the pop genre

·         There is regular references to films, TV programs and other music videos (Intertexuality)

In our music video, we have use genre characteristics in the amount of performance we have in our video. I think that if we didn't have a large percentage of performance in our video, then it wouldn't suit the genre. However i think if the dark theme was kept then the performance may not have a massive effect on the video.

Promotional strategies

There are a range of ways to advertise music these days. The main way these days is to use social networking websites such as Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. However the website that has become more popular over the past few years is YouTube.
YouTube is a very easy way to advertise your music, whether it is in an advert, or publishing your own video. There are also companies such as Vevo, or record labels such as Run For Cover, that publish bands that are on their label or have a contract with the company and they endorse their videos, increasing the amount of views.

Another common way to advertise is on the radio. Popular radio stations such as BBC’s Radio 1 have shows dedicated to specific music genres, meaning that even small bands can have their time to shine to have interviews and play their music on a worldwide radio station. They can they plug their latest album, video or tour.

A method with is coming less popular is the magazine ad. Magazines are becoming less popular as most bands prefer to advertise themselves on their own page. However a lot of bands still like to be featured in magazines to advertise upcoming tours and releases.

Conventions of a Digipack and a Website

Digipacks these days tend to released as several different versions. There is the standard plastic case release, but more bands are releasing special edition cd’s. The CD’s are commonly released in cases that are made out of card because it is cheap and more aesthetically pleasing.
The examples below are all special edition releases that are made out of cardboard.

The standard cd release comes normally comes with a cd in a case with the booklet which includes pictures and lyrics and words of thanks from the band.

The first conventional website is from US Rock band ‘All Time Low’. The band is very conventional and laid out in a very basic and easy to navigate manner. The links at the top of the web page there are the conventional links (eg news, music store etc etc) and the homepage is filled with the latest news of the band.

The second conventional page is a very basic webpage and the soul purpose of this website is to advertise the upcoming album. A lot of bands do this because they can have updates on social networking sites and use their website purely for advertisement.

Your Demise Website Analysis

The Your Demise website is a very marketed website. It has all of Your Demise’s partners above the navigation bar and an advert for their new EP which takes up around 2/3rds on the page. However I think this is good because it means that the webpage isn’t filled with unnecessary material, which won’t appeal to the fans.

The links at the top of the page are also relevant to the band as they are everything that a fan, or a web surfer will need to see. I also think the Music/Discography is a very good feature as most bands overlook their old music and want to advertise their new music.

Touché Amoré Website Analysis

The first website is American hardcore band is Touché Amoré. The website uses the popular website Tumblr. This is a very common strategy as Tumblr is free and you can follow people for updates. Meaning that an email subscription option, which is very common with bands, is not needed as they use Tumblrs own mailing options.
They have very minimal text to keep the website simple and they have their logo at the top of the page so the people browsing know what band it is.
The band also have quick links to their twitter, facebook, intargram and youtube, so that people visiting the website can keep up with the bands updates, photos and videos on a variety of different social networking websites.
