Analysing Ed Sheeran's 'You Need Me, I Don't Need Me'

Video here

As you can see by the notes, Ed Sheeran has written a song thats explaining how he has done everything himself and that he is not another manufactured pop artist. He says 'I sing and write my own tune and i write my own very, Hell don't need another word-smith to make my tune sell', meaning he writes his own stuff and sells it, he doesn't need someone (a word-smith) to come and write 'his' lyrics/music for him. He also swears a lot in the song, showing that he is using his own vocabulary and isn't obeying the clean cut pop rules.

He also says 'Times at The Enterprise when some fella filmed me, A young singer-writer like Gabriella Cilmi', linking the song back to his roots. A venue where he used to perform; The Enterprise, situated in Camden, London. He also name drops another successful young artist Gabriella Cilmi who is the same age as Ed Sheeran and is extremely popular worldwide. Maybe hinting he is nothing special for his age, there are other young singers and songwriters all over the world.

The title and main lyrics of the song ('you need me, I don't need you') could be his reaction to major record labels. Between the years of 2009 and 2011, Ed Sheeran made a name for himself independently including a headline spot at Glastonbury on the Radio 1 introducing stage. However in 2011 Ed Sheeran was signed to Asylum Records and Atlantic Records and later that year (9/9) released his debut album, +, that sold 58,000 copies in it's first week.

Ed Sheeran proved to the World that an independent artist, with hard work, determination and mainly keeping their music their way, can become a Worldwide hit.
